Selecting a monologue

Your WHY:

This is the most important part of the work! The monologue must mean something to you ‘personally‘.

What is expected is:

  • A few paragraphs about why it means something to you

and

  • A paragraph or two about what you hope to achieve as an actor by going on this particular journey.

For instance:

I want to do this monologue because it reminds me of my relationship with my father. My father left us when I was little, and this monologue is about a kid who was abandoned in a fare ground when he was only 8 years old….etc. etc.

and

I never had the opportunity to tell my father how I felt, because he never came back, and all these years I still wonder if he’s okay, why he left, and why he never contacted us at any point during these years. Doing the monologue is going to give me the opportunity to go on that journey, to explore my feelings all these years later, etc. etc.

(see how it’s personal!!!)

Do the above exercise for 2 monologues. Depending on your experience as an Actor and, if you want me to make a recommendation and advise you about my thoughts on which monologue may be most suitable for you, I’m happy to do so.

The clearer you get on your ‘why’ for doing a particular monologue at the outset, the more you’ll invest in it, and the more you’ll grow as an Actor.

Please send your paragraphs (i) to me along with your monologue (ii) and your research (iii) which is what you’ve learned about the story, the character, the relationships the character has with the other character(s) in the story, or the situation in which your character finds him/herself.
